Fun Facts

It's been a while since I've posted 'Fun Facts.' Today felt like a good day for a little break – maybe learn a few FUN FACTS, maybe find something to use in your current or a future WIP – Enjoy!

First pick in the first NFL draft was Jay Berwanger in 1936. He never played - he became a writer.

The year on a bottle of wine refers to when the grapes were picked, not when the wine was bottled.

It's not an old wives' tale! A fruitcake, properly prepared and stored, will last for 25 years.

At its thickest point, the ice in Antarctica is 15,700 feet thick.

At -90º F, your breath will freeze in mid-air - and drop to the ground.

Author Anne Rice's real name is Howard O'Brien. She was named after her father.

Adding up all the times you blink in a day, your eyes are closed for a total of thirty minutes.

Tapeworms can grow to be 75 feet long in humans.

It takes 23 seconds for blood to make a complete circuit of the human body.

Dogs have about 10 vocal cords, cats have over 100.

A snail can sleep for three years.

Washington State has the longest single beach in the United States – Long Beach, WA.

  1. Thanks for these fact - They really are interesting! I don't know why, but I'm especially drawn to the one about the thickness of the ice at Antarctica. It's just hard to get my head 'round it...

  2. What interesting facts. It's always fun to find out things like this.

  3. EXCELLENT fun facts!!! I love the one about the fruit cake!! Wow!!! I have this thing where I bake a fruit cake in november, store it and serve it for easter and so far it's been such a success!! But 25 years?!?! Wow.

The snail fact is pretty cool too. I like snails and this makes them doubly interesting! Thanks for these!

    Take care

  4. Fun facts! Here's one I just read off a Snapple cap: cats have two sets of vocal chords one form meowing and one for purring.

  5. Margot: Right?! It's darn near as *bad* as trying to grasp infinity - that one just boggles my mind.

Mason: I'm glad you like them! I have this *thing* for facts...

Old Kitty: Isn't that amazing about fruit cakes? See, now you can spend a mere couple of days baking and be giving them away for years! LOL!

Holly: Thanks for sharing the cat fact! That's really neat that Snapple does that...I may have to drink it on a more regular basis to get my *fact* fix! :)

  6. You learn something new every day. I didn't need to hear about the tapeworm though LOL! I love the show on Animal Planet called Monsters Inside Us about parasites.

  7. These are all great, and I didn't know ANY of them. Thanks!

  8. Can I blink all at once and get an extra thirty minutes of sleep?

  9. Stephen: I still remember watching, "That's Incredible" back in the '70s and learning about mites and how they're on your skin, your sheets and just about everywhere else. Ugh!

Carol: Aren't facts fun? Glad you didn't know any! You learned a lot then!

Alex: Give that a try and let me know how it works for you! :)

  10. These ARE fun! That cat vocal chord one explains a lot, and I have a friend who is sort of a snail nut who will go nuts over that one.

Mentioning the longest beach reminds me of another fact: The longest undammed river in the US is the Salmon River, which is also the longest to start and end in the same state: Idaho. (I was once a licensed whitewater guide on it)

  11. Hart: Great to *see* you! Ooh and thanks for another cool fact! That's pretty awesome!

    CC: ♥

  12. Those are fun facts! I never knew that about dogs and cats vocal cords - wow!

  13. Hey that was some neat stuff! Especially about Anne Rice. I really thought that was her real name!
