Fun Facts

Monday Menagerie

In addition to motivational and inspiring thoughts, I'm a fan of trivia and what some call "useless knowledge." In my humble opinion, no knowledge is useless, but regardless, below is a list of some interesting fun facts. And who knows, these pieces of information might just come in handy with your writing! Anyway, they are fun little tidbits!

- All swans in England are the property of the queen or king.

- Urban birds have developed a short, fast "rap style" of singing, different from their rural counterparts.

- In Hong Kong, a betrayed wife is legally allowed to kill her cheating adulterous husband but she may only do so with her bare hands.

- Adding a drop of olive oil and lemon juice to an ice cube then running it over your face gives you better results than some expensive skin care products.

- You will weigh less if you weigh yourself when the moon is full.

- Honeybees never sleep.

- Every day is about 55 billionths of a second longer than the day before it.

- Venus is the only planet that rotates clockwise.

- Earthworms have five hearts.

- Fingerprints of koalas are similar (in pattern, shape and size) to the fingerprints of humans.

- If an Amish man has a beard, he is married.

- If a native Hawaiian woman places the flower on her right ear, she is available, (the bigger the flower, the more desperate).

- Apples, not caffeine, are more efficient at waking you up in the morning.

- Fathers tend to determine the height of their child, mothers their weight.

- A "lost world" exists in the Indonesian jungle that is home to dozens of hitherto unknown animal and plant species.

- As of 2006, more than one in eight people in the United States showed signs of addiction to the internet.

Mmmm...2006 is nearly 4 years ago. I wonder how many people are currently addicted to the internet...or better yet to blogging. After searching for an answer to that, the best I could find was that it is "in the millions."

  1. Interesting facts! I guess if a man wants to lower his odds of overweight kids, he needs a skinny wife LOL

  3. I'm a useless trivia fan, too! Plus, I think I was a honeybee in a former life.

  4. Diane: I've been attempting to come up with a reply and just gave up on that. I'm sitting here laughing - a great way to kick-start the day! Thanks for that! LOL.

Elizabeth: I'm so glad others like facts like these as well. Why they are sometimes referred to as useless knowledge is beyond me! I LOVE this stuff and often will look up the strangest things, like "I wonder where that saying came from?" Glad you enjoyed them...

Alan: You have such a talent at off-the-wall comments. You ALWAYS make me laugh.

  5. I knew all of these of course - who doesn't? LOL - pretty incredible trivias. Hey the 55billionth of a second per day longer thingy - I calculated that 13,054,945,054,945 years from now the calendar will have to have an extra day added to it.

  7. Two things...Is that Hong Kong now or under British rule?
And when is the next full moon? (gotta order a scale!)

  8. Love the trivia! I wonder who owns all the ugly ducklings before they become swans? And in light of the recent tape of Trump that surfaced where he basically picks what he thinks are the most beautiful girls for the Miss USA Pageant, I wonder if he had a hand in that law to the Brits.

  9. Marvin: Only The Old Silly would come up with us having to add a day to the calendar in over 13 trillion years! LOL!

Mason: Glad you like them! Monday is an "open" day, and I like to try to find a little something different to start out everyone's week.

Michelle: Ahh...your question led me to investigate. Apparently, due to the dates on the information I found, it is NOW that a woman in Hong Kong can kill her cheating husband - although it has to be with her bare hands. The mistress can be killed too, apparently in any manner the betrayed woman sees fit! (Disclaimer: internet information - I claim no validity to how accurate this actually is - although I found the same answer in several places.)

As for the full moom and weight - kind of makes sense, what with the gravitational pull of the moon, etc...

Karen: Apparently! I imagaine a lot of *women* especially will be stepping on the scale come the next full moon on December 2! :)

CC: Good question! My guess would be the ducklings would be included in that strange law of ownership. As for The Donald - beats me, but in my opinion the current Miss USA looks anorexic!

  10. Trivia is fun! Did you know there's an annual ceremony where all the swans are tagged? It's called "Swan Upping" and happens along the Thames in July. The Queen was at the ceremony this year.

  12. Trivia is never useless, it is just information that you haven't yet found a use for. Thanks for sharing these.
